Accepting the Unacceptable

by Carol Fant on May 24, 2018 · Comments: 19

It’s been a shocking 993 days since my last post. (Thank you all for staying with me, and a special thanks to those who’ve subscribed recently.) So much has happened in that L-O-N-G length of […]

Let’s Start At the Very Beginning: 10 Early Warning Signs of Dementia

by Carol Fant on April 9, 2015 · Comments: 7

My mom’s favorite movie had to be “Sound of Music.” It always seemed to be on Sunday nights, so we’d race home from church to watch it. Those songs are like my childhood soundtrack. So, […]

My Dead Run Summer

by Carol Fant on February 24, 2015 · Comments: 14

Idioms are a funny thing. You hear them all your life, never really thinking about them much. Then an expression’s used in a context that stops you, well, dead in your tracks. In the last […]

Dementia: It Is What It Is

by Carol Fant on August 23, 2014 · Comments: 5

Part of the One Brave Cowgirl Creed is: “It Is What It Is.”  Frankly, believing that when it comes to dementia (or any part of life, for that matter) is sometimes like pushing a mule […]

Down, But Not Out

by Carol Fant on July 2, 2014 · Comments: 23

This is going to sound crazy, but I didn’t think it’d be this hard. I mean…hadn’t I gone through all sorts of anticipatory grief during Mom’s years with dementia? Somehow, I thought that entitled me […]

Mom’s Gone: Now What?

by Carol Fant on April 30, 2014 · Comments: 25

“Nothing and everything has changed.” After Mom died, a friend sent this sentence to me in a long email about death, loss, and how to keep moving. She’s an expert at it, I’d say, after […]

Alien Visitation to Dementia Land

by Carol Fant on February 13, 2014 · Comments: 6

I had the most phenomenal experience this past week. I met an alien species: an 83-year old with a memory and the capacity to travel the world alone. As if that isn’t shocking enough, she […]

Every Picture Tells a Story, Or Does It?

by Carol Fant on February 7, 2014 · Comments: 6

A few weeks ago, I went to hear The Minimalists, Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus, talk about their new book,  Everything That Remains. I listened as Joshua read an emotional chapter dealing with boxing up his mom’s […]

About Carol

I’m Carol Fant, Chief Reality Officer of One Brave Cowgirl. I got that title after living with my mother’s Alzheimer’s for six years, and figuring out I had a choice: be sad and in despair 24/7, or learn to lighten up and see the gifts dementia could bring me. That’s my preferred reality, and I hope to share that with you.
